Stop Staring at Your Sails — Learn to Read the Water

The next gust may already be visible fifty metres ahead of you.

One of the first things we teach when learning to sail is to look at the sails.

Are the tell-tales streaming properly?

Is the jib beginning to lift?

Should the mainsail come in?

All of that matters. But there comes a point when staring constantly at the sails actually begins to hold your sailing back.

The sails tell you what the wind is doing now.

The water can often tell you what the wind is about to do next.

Once you begin to recognise dark patches, ripples, smooth areas and gust lines moving across the surface, the whole river starts to look different.

You stop merely reacting to the wind.

You begin anticipating it.

And that is one of the biggest steps from simply being able to sail a boat towards becoming a better sailor.


The Wind Leaves Clues on the Water

Wind blowing across water transfers some of its energy into the surface.

Very light air may leave the water almost mirror smooth.

As the wind increases, tiny ripples begin to form.

A stronger puff creates more disturbance.

From a distance, that area may therefore look darker or more textured than the surrounding water.

What appears to be a mysterious dark patch moving down the river may actually be an area of stronger wind approaching your boat.

You can sometimes see it many seconds before it arrives.

That matters enormously.

If a gust is fifty metres away, you may have enough time to:

  • prepare the crew;

  • adjust your position in the boat;

  • ease or trim a sail;

  • consider your course;

  • anticipate a wind shift;

  • decide whether a tack might soon be useful.

Instead of suddenly discovering that the boat is heeling sharply, everybody aboard already knows what is coming.

That is a completely different style of sailing.


What Does a Gust Look Like?

There is no single appearance that every gust produces.

Water, light and wind direction all affect what we see.

However, there are several useful clues.

Darker patches

Probably the easiest clue for beginners to recognise is a darker patch of water surrounded by smoother-looking water.

The increased wind creates more small ripples.

Those ripples reflect the sky and surroundings at many different angles, changing the apparent brightness of the water.

On the Thames this can be surprisingly obvious.

You may look upstream and see what appears to be a dark patch travelling towards you.

That may be the next puff of wind.

Watch it.

Does it move?

Does it spread?

What happens to another boat when it reaches them?

Then wait.

A few seconds later you may feel exactly the wind you have just been watching arrive.

The first time you consciously notice this happening is quite memorable.


A Gust Line Can Look Like a Line Across the River

Sometimes the boundary between stronger and lighter wind is particularly clear.

You may see an almost distinct line across the surface.

On one side the water is relatively smooth.

On the other it is covered with small ripples.

That is often called a gust line.

It is worth watching both the line itself and its angle.

Suppose it is approaching your boat diagonally rather than squarely.

One side of the boat may enter the new wind before the other.

Or a boat further across the river may receive the gust several seconds before you do.

That tells you something very useful.

The wind is not simply becoming stronger.

It may also be arriving from a slightly different direction.


Look at Other Boats

One of the best wind indicators on the river is another sailing boat.

Imagine you are sailing towards a boat fifty metres ahead.

Suddenly it heels.

Its crew moves.

Its mainsail is eased.

Then it accelerates.

Nothing has happened to your boat yet.

But something probably will.

The boat ahead has just become your advance warning system.

In a fleet this becomes particularly useful.

You can often see a gust arriving at the boats ahead and watch the effect move progressively through the fleet.

Likewise, if several boats ahead suddenly lose speed and their sails start hanging loosely, you may be about to sail into a hole.

Good sailors are constantly gathering this sort of information.

They are not necessarily staring intensely at one particular thing.

They are scanning.

Water.

Sails.

Trees.

Flags.

Other boats.

Clouds.

Then back to the water again.


The Glassy Patch May Be Just as Important

Everybody notices the gust that makes the boat heel.

The opposite can be equally important.

Sometimes an area ahead looks unusually smooth or glassy.

That can indicate very little surface wind.

Sail into it and the boat that was moving beautifully a few seconds earlier may suddenly slow almost to a halt.

The sails soften.

The helm becomes less responsive.

The crew asks:

"Where has the wind gone?"

But perhaps the warning was already visible on the water.

This can be particularly frustrating on inland waters because the wind is rarely distributed evenly.

Trees, buildings, hills and bends in the river interfere with the airflow.

One part of the river may have useful wind while another, only a short distance away, can be almost completely sheltered.

So another useful habit develops.

Do not automatically sail towards the smoothest-looking water.

Sometimes you should be asking:

Where is the pressure?


What Sailors Mean by "Pressure"

Sailors often talk about finding pressure.

It sounds rather technical, but usually they simply mean finding the area where there is more useful wind.

You might hear someone say:

"There's more pressure on the far side."

They are not necessarily measuring atmospheric pressure.

They have probably noticed that the water over there is darker, the boats are moving faster, or the sails are carrying better.

For somebody learning to sail, this is an important change in thinking.

Instead of seeing the entire river as one uniform area of wind, imagine it as a constantly changing patchwork.

Here there is a little more wind.

There is a lull.

Another gust is approaching.

The left side looks stronger.

A patch of pressure is spreading down from the bend.

The river becomes almost like a moving weather map.


The Gust Is Not Necessarily Coming Straight Towards You

Here is where reading the water becomes even more interesting.

Suppose you can see a dark patch approaching.

The obvious assumption is:

More wind is coming.

But ask another question:

From what direction?

Watch the texture carefully.

Look at the edge of the gust.

Watch boats that enter it before you.

Perhaps their heading changes.

Perhaps their sails suddenly need trimming differently.

That gust may contain both a change in wind strength and a change in wind direction.

This links directly with recognising lifts and headers.

A patch of new wind arriving from a slightly different direction may lift one boat while heading another, depending upon which tack each boat is sailing.

So learning to read the water does not sit separately from learning about wind shifts.

The two skills gradually merge together.


A Simple Exercise for Your Next Sail

This is something almost anybody can practise.

You do not need to be racing.

You do not need instruments.

You do not even need particularly strong wind.

For five minutes, deliberately stop concentrating only on the immediate area around the boat.

Look twenty metres ahead.

Then fifty metres.

Then towards the far bank.

Ask yourself:

Where does the water look rougher?

Where does it look smoother?

Is anything moving towards me?

Which boats appear to have more wind?

Are flags or trees showing the same thing?

Then make a prediction.

For example:

"I think we are going to get a stronger puff in about ten seconds."

Then see whether you were right.

At first you will be wrong surprisingly often.

That does not matter.

The important part is developing the habit of looking and predicting.

Gradually your predictions improve.


Try Calling the Gusts for the Helm

This is also a useful exercise for a crew.

The crew often has more freedom to look around than the person steering.

Instead of saying nothing until the boat suddenly heels, try calling what you see:

"More wind coming."

"Gust in five seconds."

"Stronger pressure on our side."

"Looks lighter ahead."

"Gust coming from the right."

Communication like this can transform the way a boat is sailed.

It gives the helm time to prepare.

It also makes the crew an active part of sailing the boat rather than simply somebody operating a jib sheet.

In a multi-crew boat that observational role becomes even more valuable.


Preparing Before the Gust Arrives

Imagine sailing upwind in moderate conditions.

You see a strong dark patch approaching.

There are two very different ways the next ten seconds could unfold.

The reactive sailor

The gust hits.

The boat heels.

The helm pulls the tiller.

The sails overpower.

Someone scrambles across the boat.

The mainsheet is eased late.

Speed is lost.

The anticipating sailor

The gust is spotted.

The crew is warned.

Everybody prepares to move.

The helm watches for any directional change.

The boat enters the gust already balanced.

The extra wind becomes extra speed.

Same gust.

Same boat.

Completely different result.

That is why looking ahead matters.


Reading the Water Is Especially Valuable on a River

Open-water sailing certainly involves wind shifts and gusts, but river sailing adds another layer of complexity.

Banks disturb the air.

Tall trees create shelter.

Buildings can funnel or block the wind.

A bend changes your relationship with the surrounding landscape.

Gaps between trees can produce surprisingly strong lanes of wind.

The result can be a patchwork of wind conditions over a relatively small distance.

On a reach such as the Thames, you can sometimes have one boat moving beautifully while another nearby appears almost becalmed.

A few seconds later their situations can reverse.

It makes inland sailing fascinating.

It also makes observation exceptionally important.


Be Careful — Not Every Dark Patch Is Wind

There is an important warning here.

Do not assume that every colour change on the water marks a gust.

Water appearance can also be affected by:

  • shadows from clouds;

  • shadows from trees;

  • reflections from buildings;

  • changes in water depth;

  • current;

  • passing powered boats;

  • wake;

  • floating material;

  • changes in sunlight.

This is why one clue is rarely enough.

Ask whether the evidence agrees.

Is the patch moving?

Are nearby leaves moving?

Are flags changing?

Does another sailing boat heel when the patch reaches it?

Do the ripples have an obvious direction?

The more clues that agree, the more confidence you can have.


Champagne Makes Small Changes Very Obvious

One of the pleasures of sailing a responsive boat is that changes in the wind become much easier to notice.

In a relatively forgiving training boat, a small gust or wind shift might require only a modest correction.

In an A-Rater such as Champagne, changes can become much more obvious.

A little extra pressure can immediately translate into acceleration.

A shift can alter your apparent course noticeably.

A badly anticipated gust can quickly disturb the balance of the boat.

That makes a fast boat a remarkable teacher.

It encourages you to stop waiting for things to happen.

You start watching for the signs that they are about to happen.

That principle applies just as much to someone learning in a club training boat.

The reactions may be gentler, but the information is still there.


Coyote Can Offer an Even Better View

Ironically, one of the best places to study this effect may not be from a sailing boat at all.

From a safety or camera boat such as Coyote, it is possible to look across a much larger area of water without concentrating on sail trim or steering a sailing dinghy.

From there, contrasting patches on the river can become remarkably obvious.

It would make an interesting photographic exercise.

Take a photograph showing several sailing boats spread across the river.

Then look closely at the water surrounding them.

Which boats appear to be in pressure?

Where is the smooth water?

Can you see the gust approaching?

A still photograph can sometimes reveal patterns that you hardly noticed while afloat.


Eventually You Stop Thinking About It

Like many sailing skills, reading the water initially feels very deliberate.

You have to remind yourself:

"Look ahead."

"Find the dark patches."

"Watch the other boats."

Later it becomes almost automatic.

You notice a gust without consciously deciding to search for it.

Your body begins preparing for it.

Your attention moves naturally between the boat and the environment.

And that is an important transition.

Because sailing is not really about operating a collection of ropes, sails and controls.

It is about continually responding to the environment around you.


Stop Looking at the Boat All the Time

Beginners understandably spend enormous amounts of time looking into the boat.

Where is the rope?

Where is the tiller?

What is the sail doing?

As experience develops, your field of attention needs to expand.

Look at the water.

Look at the boats ahead.

Look at the trees.

Look at the clouds.

Look towards where you are going.

The boat will tell you what is happening to it.

The world around the boat may tell you what is going to happen next.

And sometimes the difference between being surprised by a gust and using it beautifully is simply that one sailor looked fifty metres further ahead.

The next gust may already be visible.

You just have to learn how to see it.

Lifted or Headed? Learning to Recognise a Wind Shift

Sometimes the wind gives you twenty metres for free.

One of the biggest changes that happens as you progress from simply learning to sail to becoming a better sailor is that you begin to realise something rather important:

The wind is not fixed.

When we first learn to sail, diagrams usually show a neat arrow labelled WIND.

The arrow comes from one direction. The boat is shown close-hauled, reaching or running relative to that arrow, and everything appears wonderfully predictable.

Real sailing is rarely like that.

The wind might be coming over your left shoulder one moment and several degrees further forward a minute later. It may bend around trees, buildings and riverbanks. A gust may arrive from a slightly different direction. A cloud may alter the local airflow. On an inland river such as the Thames, the wind reaching one part of the river can be noticeably different from that reaching another.

And one of the most useful skills a sailor can develop is recognising those changes.

Sailors normally describe them using two wonderfully simple words:

Lifted.

and

Headed.

Understanding the difference can transform the way you sail upwind.


What Is a Lift?

Imagine you are sailing close-hauled.

Your sails are trimmed correctly and the boat is sailing about as close to the wind as it comfortably can.

Now the wind direction changes slightly.

Suddenly the wind is coming from a little further around the side of the boat rather than directly towards the bow.

You could leave everything as it is.

But if you want to remain close-hauled, you can turn the boat slightly towards the wind.

You are now travelling on a more favourable course.

You have been lifted.

If you are trying to reach somewhere directly upwind, that can be extremely valuable.

Instead of sailing quite so far sideways across the river, you are travelling a little more directly towards your destination.

The wind has effectively given you some distance for nothing.


What Is a Header?

Now imagine the opposite happens.

You are sailing happily close-hauled and the wind shifts towards the bow.

Your sails begin to complain.

The jib may start to lift.

The front of the mainsail may begin to flutter.

The boat may slow.

If you continue steering exactly the same course, eventually you will be pointing too close to the wind to sail efficiently.

You therefore have to bear away.

You are now travelling further away from the direction in which you wanted to go.

You have been headed.

This is where the expression comes from: the wind shift has effectively pushed your course away from the direction you wanted.


The Important Part: The Same Wind Shift Can Lift One Boat and Head Another

This is the part that initially seems strange.

How can exactly the same change in wind direction be good for one boat and bad for another?

Because the boats are pointing in different directions.

Imagine two boats sailing upwind.

One is on port tack.

The other is on starboard tack.

They are effectively sailing along opposite sides of a giant letter V.

Now allow the wind direction to rotate slightly.

For one boat, that shift moves the wind further towards its bow.

That boat is headed.

But for the boat travelling on the opposite tack, exactly the same change moves the wind further away from its bow.

That boat is lifted.

Nothing contradictory has happened.

The wind has changed once.

The two boats simply experience that change from opposite directions.

This is why you will sometimes see two boats apparently sailing towards the same destination when one suddenly tacks while the other continues happily onwards.

They may both have recognised the same wind shift.

They are simply reacting to it differently.


An Easy Way to Visualise It

Suppose you are beating towards a buoy, tree, bridge or other obvious point ahead.

Choose something in the distance as a reference.

You are sailing close-hauled and notice that your bow is pointing reasonably close towards that reference.

A few moments later, without any major steering error, you find that you can point noticeably closer towards it while keeping the sails working properly.

You have probably been lifted.

Alternatively, perhaps you suddenly have to steer further away from the reference to keep the sails drawing.

You have probably been headed.

That simple observation is far more useful to a developing sailor than immediately worrying about compass bearings and tactical diagrams.

Start by asking:

Am I able to point closer towards where I want to go, or am I being forced further away?

That is the beginning of recognising wind shifts.


Why This Matters Most When Sailing Upwind

Wind shifts occur on every point of sail, but they become particularly obvious when beating.

When reaching, there is usually considerable freedom to alter the sail trim or course while continuing towards your destination.

Close-hauled sailing is different.

You are already operating close to the limit of how near the boat can sail towards the wind.

A relatively small wind shift can therefore make quite a noticeable difference.

Perhaps you were sailing comfortably at 45 degrees to the wind.

Then the wind changes by 10 degrees.

Ten degrees does not sound very dramatic.

But over several hundred metres, that difference can amount to tens of metres of distance gained or lost towards your destination.

This is where our opening statement comes from:

Sometimes the wind really can give you twenty metres for free.

The important thing is recognising when it has happened.


"Tack on a Header"

This brings us to one of those sailing expressions that can sound rather mysterious when you first hear it:

Tack on a header.

It does not mean that every time the jib flutters you should immediately throw the boat into a tack.

It is simply based on the principle we have just discussed.

If you are being headed on one tack, the other tack has normally become more favourable.

Remember:

The same wind shift that heads one tack lifts the other.

Imagine you are beating towards the windward mark.

You are on starboard tack and gradually the wind changes so that you have to bear away.

Your course towards the mark becomes worse.

If you tack, you may discover that the new tack points much more favourably towards the mark.

Instead of accepting the unfavourable heading, you change sides and use the favourable one.

That is the basic idea behind tacking on a header.

There are many tactical complications in serious racing, but a beginner does not need them yet.

The useful principle is simply:

If the wind is pushing your current tack away from where you want to go, ask whether the other tack would take you there more directly.


Do Not Tack Every Time the Wind Moves

There is an important warning here.

Wind constantly moves backwards and forwards.

If you react to every tiny twitch in the tell-tales, you can spend the entire race tacking.

And every tack costs something.

The boat slows.

The sails cross.

The crew move.

The rudder creates drag.

You then have to accelerate again.

On some boats the loss is relatively small.

On others it is significant.

So the objective is not:

Detect every wind movement and immediately tack.

It is:

Learn to recognise meaningful changes.

Sometimes the best response is simply to wait for a few seconds and see whether the wind returns.


Oscillating Wind Shifts

A very common situation, particularly inland, is an oscillating wind.

The wind swings one way.

Then later it swings back again.

Then perhaps it moves the other way.

Imagine the average wind direction remains broadly the same, but it wanders perhaps ten degrees either side.

If you can recognise that pattern, something interesting becomes possible.

You sail while you are lifted.

When the wind heads you significantly, you tack.

The previously unfavourable shift may now be helping you on the other tack.

As the wind oscillates backwards and forwards, you try to spend more time sailing the favourable angles.

You do not need sophisticated instruments to begin learning this.

Your boat, sails and surroundings are already giving you information.


Watch the Jib

One of the best wind-shift instruments aboard many dinghies is sitting directly in front of you.

The jib.

When sailing close-hauled, the jib can often show the beginning of a header extremely clearly.

If the wind moves forward, the windward tell-tale may lift.

The leading edge of the jib may begin to flutter.

The helm may instinctively bear away to keep it drawing.

That is information.

Do not simply think:

"The jib is flapping."

Ask:

"Why is the jib flapping?"

Did the helm accidentally turn towards the wind?

Or did the wind turn towards the boat?

Those are completely different situations.

Learning to distinguish between them is part of becoming a more observant sailor.


Look Outside the Boat

This links directly with one of the most important ideas in this series:

Better sailors spend a surprising amount of time looking away from the boat.

Look at boats ahead of you.

Are they suddenly heeling?

Have they changed course?

Has someone ahead just tacked?

Is a boat on the opposite tack suddenly pointing noticeably higher?

Look at the water.

Dark patches may indicate approaching gusts.

Look at flags and burgees.

Look at smoke.

Look at trees.

Look at moored boats.

All of them can give clues about what the wind is doing.

Eventually, instead of merely reacting to a wind shift after it reaches you, you may begin anticipating it before it arrives.

That is a substantial step forward.


Wind Shifts on the Thames Can Be Particularly Interesting

Inland river sailing provides an excellent environment for learning about changing wind.

The wind reaching the river may have travelled across:

  • houses;

  • trees;

  • fields;

  • riverbanks;

  • buildings;

  • gaps between trees;

  • higher ground;

  • open stretches of water.

All of these can affect it.

The wind can accelerate through a gap.

It can become turbulent behind trees.

It may bend around an obstruction.

One side of the river can sometimes appear to have more wind than the other.

A bend in the river adds another complication because your destination itself changes direction.

That is very different from sailing several miles offshore with relatively unobstructed airflow.

It can occasionally be frustrating.

But it is also an excellent classroom.


Why It Becomes So Obvious in Champagne

Sailing an A-Rater such as Champagne makes these changes especially interesting.

A slower training boat gives you time to recognise what is happening, which makes it an excellent platform for learning.

A fast boat makes the consequences much more obvious.

When Champagne is moving properly, relatively small differences in heading and wind strength can translate quickly into significant differences in position.

A favourable shift can suddenly make the boat appear to be charging directly towards where you want to go.

An unfavourable one can leave you sailing rapidly in entirely the wrong direction.

Speed magnifies tactical decisions.

That is one of the fascinating things about moving between boats.

The fundamental physics has not changed.

The wind has not learnt a new set of rules because you stepped into an A-Rater.

But the consequences become much easier to see.

And because the boat covers distance so rapidly, recognising a shift early can make a considerable difference by the time you reach the next mark.


Crew Can Help Spot the Shift

This is also another example of why sailing is not simply about the person holding the tiller.

A crew member looking forwards may notice things that the helm misses.

They might call:

"The boats ahead are lifting."

or:

"There is more pressure coming down the left."

or simply:

"We seem to be getting headed."

Good communication allows the whole boat to build a picture of what the wind is doing.

On a three-person boat such as an A-Rater, that becomes particularly valuable.

The helm does not need to discover everything personally.

Several pairs of eyes can be watching the course, sails, competition and water.


Try This Next Time You Sail

You can practise recognising lifts and headers without entering a race.

Find a stretch where you can safely sail close-hauled for a reasonable distance.

Choose a fixed point ahead as a visual reference.

Then pay attention to where the bow points relative to it.

Do not deliberately alter course unless necessary to keep the sails drawing properly.

After a few minutes ask yourself:

Has my close-hauled heading remained constant?

You may be surprised how much it changes.

Then tack and repeat the experiment.

Try noticing whether a wind change that was unfavourable before the tack becomes favourable afterwards.

That simple exercise teaches far more than memorising a diagram.


The Next Stage in Learning to Sail

Early sailing lessons concentrate quite correctly on the boat.

Where is the tiller?

How do I trim the sails?

How do I tack?

How do I gybe?

How do I stop?

Once those skills begin to become automatic, your attention can start moving outside the boat.

You begin watching the water.

The clouds.

Other boats.

The riverbank.

The sails of boats ahead.

And eventually you begin to realise that the racecourse — or simply the stretch of river you are sailing along — is constantly changing.

The wind is shifting.

The pressure is changing.

Some parts of the water are more favourable than others.

This is where sailing becomes endlessly fascinating.

Two sailors can have identical boats and identical sails.

Both may steer accurately.

Both may trim their sails well.

Yet one may arrive significantly ahead simply because they recognised what the wind was doing several seconds earlier.


Sometimes the Wind Gives You Twenty Metres for Free

A lift is not extra boat speed.

You have not suddenly developed more horsepower.

Nothing mechanical has changed.

Instead, the wind has allowed you to point your existing speed in a more useful direction.

Recognise that opportunity and you gain distance towards your destination.

Miss it, and somebody else may use it instead.

So the next time you are sailing close-hauled and suddenly find yourself pointing much more favourably towards the mark, do not simply think:

"That's nice."

Ask why.

And when the wind starts pushing your bow away from where you want to go, ask another question:

Would the other tack now be better?

That simple thought is the beginning of sailing wind shifts.

And once you start seeing them, you may wonder how you ever sailed without noticing them.

Why Does the Wind Sometimes Disappear When It Rains?

The rain starts — and your sails suddenly hang uselessly. Coincidence? Quite often, no.

It is something I have noticed many times while sailing.

You are moving along quite happily. There is pressure in the sails, the boat responds properly to the helm and perhaps you are beginning to think about whether you are on the best tack.

Then the sky darkens.

A few spots of rain appear on the water.

For a moment, the breeze may even strengthen.

Then the rain arrives properly — and suddenly the wind seems to disappear.

The sails go soft. Boat speed falls away. The helm loses its feel.

On an inland river such as the Thames, the effect can be remarkably dramatic.

So is the rain actually switching the wind off?

Not quite.

But the weather associated with rain can substantially change the way wind is transported through the lowest few hundred metres of the atmosphere — and therefore how much of that wind eventually reaches our sails.

Understanding why is useful scientifically.

Understanding what to look for is useful as a sailor.

And sometimes it can even be useful tactically.


There May Still Be Plenty of Wind — Just Not Where You Are

One of the first things to appreciate is that the wind at mast height is not necessarily the same as the wind a few hundred metres above us.

Wind speed generally increases with height because air close to the ground is slowed by friction.

Trees, buildings, river banks, hills and other obstacles complicate things further.

The atmosphere therefore needs a mechanism for continually mixing air vertically.

On a sunny or reasonably warm day, the ground is heated by the Sun. The air immediately above it warms, becomes less dense and rises.

Other air moves down to replace it.

This creates turbulence and convection.

That mixing can bring faster-moving air from higher in the atmosphere down towards the surface.

To a sailor, it appears as the breeze we feel at water level.

Then the weather changes.

A thick rain cloud moves overhead.

Solar heating falls dramatically.

The surface begins to cool.

Rain may cool the air still further.

The lowest layer of the atmosphere becomes more stable.

Vertical mixing decreases.

There may still be a considerable wind above us, but much less of its momentum is being mixed down to river level.

From the boat it can feel as though somebody has turned the wind off.


Why Inland Sailors Can Notice This So Strongly

This effect is particularly interesting on inland water.

At sea, there may be a relatively unobstructed wind extending across a very large area.

A river is different.

On the Thames the wind has already had to negotiate:

  • trees;

  • houses;

  • hills;

  • river banks;

  • bends in the river;

  • gaps between buildings;

  • woodland;

  • differences between sunny and shaded areas.

That produces an extraordinarily complicated wind field.

Anyone who sails regularly on a river soon discovers that the wind on one part of the reach can be quite different from the wind only a few hundred metres away.

Sometimes it is different only a few boat lengths away.

Add an approaching rain shower to that already complicated situation and the result can be fascinating.

And occasionally frustrating.


Rain Can Cool the Air

Cloud cover is only part of the story.

Rain itself can contribute to cooling.

Turning liquid water into water vapour requires energy. If some of a falling raindrop evaporates, that energy comes from the surrounding air.

The air cools.

It is the same basic reason that wet skin feels cold when water evaporates from it.

If the air below a cloud is relatively dry, quite a substantial amount of rain can evaporate before it reaches the ground.

This can create a region of cooler, denser air beneath a shower.

That cooler air may descend towards the surface.

And this is where the story becomes more complicated.

Because rain can sometimes reduce the wind we experience — but under other circumstances it can produce a sudden burst of wind.


Sometimes the Wind Increases Before the Rain Arrives

A pattern I find particularly interesting while sailing is that the sequence can sometimes be something like:

Normal breeze → stronger gust → wind shift → rain → lull

That stronger wind immediately before the rain makes the subsequent loss of pressure feel particularly dramatic.

What may be happening is that cooler air is descending beneath the shower.

When this descending air reaches the surface, it cannot continue downwards, so it spreads horizontally.

That spreading air can produce a small gust front or outflow boundary ahead of the rain itself.

The wind at the boat can therefore increase before the actual rain reaches you.

The direction may change as well.

Then, once the shower passes overhead and the local atmosphere becomes cooler and more stable, the surface wind may weaken substantially.

From the sailor's perspective:

The breeze builds.

Something changes.

The rain arrives.

Then the sails collapse.

It can happen surprisingly quickly.


But Do Not Learn the Rule "Rain Means Less Wind"

This is important.

Rain does not automatically mean that the wind will decrease.

A gentle area of persistent rain beneath thick cloud is very different meteorologically from a vigorous convective shower.

A strong shower — and particularly a thunderstorm — can contain powerful descending air.

When that air reaches the surface and spreads out, wind speeds can increase sharply.

There can also be abrupt changes in direction.

So a better rule is:

Steady rain and thick cloud can suppress surface mixing and sometimes reduce the wind at water level.

But:

A vigorous shower can produce strong gusts and rapid wind shifts.

That distinction matters enormously to sailors.

If a dark shower is approaching, assuming "the rain will kill the wind" could be exactly the wrong response.

The correct response is to watch what the atmosphere is actually doing.


A Sailor Is an Extremely Sensitive Wind Detector

There is another reason sailors notice this phenomenon so readily.

We are remarkably sensitive to very small changes in wind speed.

Someone walking beside the river might barely notice the difference between an 8-knot and 4-knot breeze.

In a sailing dinghy, the difference is enormous.

At 8 knots the sails have pressure.

The boat accelerates.

The helm has feel.

The crew can trim against a meaningful load.

Drop that breeze to 3 or 4 knots and everything changes.

The sails begin to hang.

The boat loses speed.

The apparent wind changes.

Steering becomes less effective.

On a river, current adds another complication because the water can continue carrying the boat even when there is very little useful wind.

You can suddenly find yourself moving in a direction you had absolutely no intention of going.


Watch the Water, Not Just the Sails

One of the important steps in becoming a better sailor is learning to stop looking exclusively at your own boat.

Your sails tell you what the wind is doing now.

The river ahead can tell you what the wind may do next.

That distinction becomes very important when showers are moving across a sailing area.

Look upwind.

You may be able to see darker patches of water where increased wind is roughening the surface.

You may see smooth patches indicating very little wind.

Look at the trees.

Are the tops beginning to move more strongly?

Is movement starting on one bank before the other?

Look at the rain itself.

Is it approaching as a broad grey area?

Or is there a clearly defined, dark shower cell?

Can you see a curtain of rain beneath one part of the cloud?

And most importantly:

Which direction is it moving?

You are gradually building a mental picture of what may arrive at the boat several minutes later.

That is an important transition in sailing.

You stop merely reacting.

You begin anticipating.


The Shower May Change the Wind Direction as Well

The most interesting part for a racing sailor may not be the change in wind speed at all.

It may be the change in direction.

Cooler air descending beneath a shower can spread outwards when it reaches the surface.

The wind you experience therefore depends partly upon where you are relative to that outflow.

A shower passing to one side of the river could alter the wind direction without necessarily passing directly overhead.

This creates the possibility of a sequence such as:

gust → header → rain → lull → lift

Or:

gust → lift → rain → header

The atmosphere has no obligation to arrange itself conveniently for the sailor.


What Are a Header and a Lift?

These are two extremely useful sailing terms.

A lift is a wind shift that allows you to steer closer towards your destination while maintaining the same relationship between the boat and the wind.

A header does the opposite.

Imagine you are sailing close-hauled towards the next mark.

If the wind shifts in your favour, the boat can be pointed more directly towards the mark.

You have been lifted.

If the wind shifts the other way, you must turn away from the mark to keep the sails working efficiently.

You have been headed.

And here is the interesting part:

Exactly the same wind shift can be a lift for one boat and a header for another boat sailing on the opposite tack.

That is why a relatively small wind shift can completely alter a race.


Imagine Two Boats Approaching a Shower

Suppose two boats are beating up the river.

One is on starboard tack.

The other is on port.

Ahead is an approaching shower.

The air spreading from beneath that shower causes the wind direction to rotate.

For one boat, the new wind direction might be favourable.

Its bow can come closer to the mark.

Lift.

For the other boat, exactly the same change may force it to point further away.

Header.

That can turn a small meteorological event into a tactical opportunity.

The clever decision is not necessarily:

"Which side of the river has more wind?"

It may be:

"Which side of this shower is likely to give me the most useful wind direction?"

That is a much more advanced way of looking at the river.


Champagne Makes These Changes Particularly Interesting

Sailing an A-Rater such as Champagne makes these changes especially noticeable.

A boat with a large sail area and a tall rig responds very visibly when the pressure changes.

When the breeze is there, the boat comes alive.

There is load in the sheets, pressure through the rig and a very obvious sense that the sails are producing power.

When the breeze disappears, that power can vanish remarkably quickly.

And because river racing involves trees, bends, buildings and highly localised patches of wind, it encourages you to look beyond the boat.

Where is the next breeze?

Where is the dark water?

What are the boats ahead doing?

Has somebody twenty boat lengths away suddenly heeled?

Has a boat on the opposite bank stopped?

Is a rain curtain moving across the reach?

The answer may be more important than another tiny adjustment to the sheet.


Sometimes Another Boat Is Your Best Weather Instrument

One of the most useful things to watch is not the cloud.

It is another sailing boat.

Suppose a boat 200 metres ahead suddenly heels over.

You may have just been given advance warning of a gust.

If its crew suddenly eases the mainsail, that is another clue.

If three boats ahead all stop almost simultaneously, the breeze may be collapsing ahead of you.

If the boats on one side of the river continue moving while those on the other side stop, you have learnt something potentially extremely useful.

You do not need an electronic weather station to see any of this.

The entire fleet becomes a network of wind sensors.

Experienced sailors are constantly collecting information from it.


Rain Can Also Change Your Apparent Wind

There is another subtlety.

The wind your sails experience is not simply the true wind blowing across the landscape.

It is the apparent wind created by combining the true wind with the boat's own movement.

As the boat slows during a lull, that apparent wind changes.

The sails may therefore require retrimming even if the true wind direction has not changed very much.

This helps explain why a boat can suddenly feel particularly lifeless after the breeze decreases.

You have lost some true wind.

The boat slows.

That alters the apparent wind.

The sails lose still more effective pressure.

The response can feel disproportionately large.


What Should You Do When the Wind Dies in Rain?

The first answer is:

Do not panic and do not immediately start making enormous control movements.

In very light wind, excessive steering creates drag.

So does unnecessary movement by the crew.

Try to keep the boat balanced and moving.

Ease the sails sufficiently to preserve their shape and telltales, but do not simply let everything flap.

Avoid repeatedly moving the rudder from side to side.

Keep looking for the next patch of wind.

And remember that the lull may be temporary.

The temptation is to react to the wind you have just lost.

The better sailor starts looking for the wind that is coming next.


And What If the Shower Is Strengthening the Wind?

Then the priorities change.

A dark, vigorous shower deserves respect.

Before it reaches you:

  • make sure sheets are clear;

  • ensure the crew are ready;

  • check that everybody understands what may happen;

  • be prepared to ease the mainsail;

  • keep the boat balanced;

  • maintain a good lookout;

  • avoid becoming trapped in a difficult position near the bank or other boats.

If conditions are becoming severe, sailing tactics cease to matter.

Boat control and safety come first.

A shower capable of producing strong downdraughts can generate much more wind than the gentle rain-and-lull effect discussed earlier.

Observation matters precisely because there is no universal rule.


The River Surface Is Telling You a Story

A very useful exercise when sailing is to deliberately spend a few minutes watching nothing but the water ahead.

Try to identify:

Smooth water
Probably very light wind.

Fine ripples
A little more breeze.

Dark patches moving across the surface
Often stronger wind approaching.

A sharply defined line between smooth and rippled water
Potentially a significant change in wind speed.

Different water textures on opposite sides of the reach
The wind may be stronger on one side.

Then compare your prediction with what actually happens when you sail into that area.

You will not always be right.

That is part of the exercise.

Gradually you begin connecting what you can see with what you later feel through the boat.


Start Looking at the Sky as Well

Then add another layer.

Watch the clouds.

Not merely whether they are dark, but how they are developing.

Are they becoming vertically taller?

Is the cloud base changing?

Is the rain concentrated beneath one region?

Is the shower moving across the river or directly towards you?

Is brighter sky appearing behind it?

A sailor does not need to become a professional meteorologist.

But learning to recognise what the atmosphere is doing can make you a much better sailor.


From Reacting to Anticipating

This is one of the themes I increasingly find fascinating about sailing.

Learning to make a boat move is only the beginning.

At first, almost all your attention is inside the boat:

Where is the tiller?

What is the mainsheet doing?

Are the sails flapping?

Which side should I sit on?

As experience develops, your attention begins to move outwards.

You start watching the water.

Then the other boats.

Then the river banks.

Then the trees.

Then the clouds.

Eventually you begin putting all those pieces together.

That is when sailing becomes much more than simply steering and trimming.

You are trying to predict an environment that is continually changing.


So Why Does the Wind Sometimes Die When It Rains?

It is rarely because rain itself has somehow "stopped" the wind.

Instead, several atmospheric processes may be occurring together.

Cloud reduces solar heating.

The surface cools.

Rain and evaporation can cool the lower atmosphere further.

The atmosphere may become more stable.

Vertical mixing decreases.

Less of the stronger wind from above reaches the water.

On an inland river, where the wind is already strongly affected by trees, buildings, banks and local heating, that reduction can be particularly noticeable.

But a vigorous shower can do almost the opposite, bringing descending air to the surface and producing strong gusts and rapid shifts.

That is why the useful sailing lesson is not:

Rain means less wind.

It is:

A shower means something is changing — start looking around.


The Most Important Instrument May Be Your Eyes

Modern sailing can involve excellent instruments.

Wind indicators, GPS, weather forecasts and detailed radar imagery can all be useful.

But there is still an extraordinary amount of information available simply by looking.

Watch the water.

Watch the boats ahead.

Watch the trees.

Watch the rain.

Watch the clouds.

And ask yourself:

What is the wind doing over there — and when is it going to reach me?

Because when rain approaches, the important question is not simply:

"Am I going to get wet?"

It is:

"What is this shower about to do to my wind?"

And if you can answer that question even slightly earlier than the boats around you, you are no longer merely reacting to the weather.

You are beginning to sail it.

You Can Sail — So What Makes Someone a Good Sailor?

The biggest improvement in your sailing may come when you stop looking at the boat.

If you have followed my first series on learning to sail, you may now know how to do many of the things that once seemed mysterious.

You can hold a course.

You understand the points of sail.

You can tack.

You can gybe.

You know what the mainsheet does.

You can trim the jib.

You can sail upwind.

You can slow the boat down and, hopefully, bring it back somewhere reasonably close to where you intended.

At that point it is tempting to think:

"I can sail."

And you can.

But there is another stage beyond simply being able to make a sailing boat go where you want it to go.

It is the difference between sailing a boat and becoming a good sailor.

That difference is much less about pulling ropes and moving the tiller.

It is about:

  • awareness;

  • observation;

  • anticipation;

  • balance;

  • judgement;

  • communication;

  • and increasingly, making decisions before they become necessary.

This second series is going to explore those skills.

Because once the basic actions become automatic, sailing becomes much more interesting.


At First, Almost Everything Happens Inside the Boat

Think back to your first few sails.

Your attention is probably almost entirely inside the boat.

Where is the tiller?

Where is the mainsheet?

Which rope is the jib sheet?

Why is the sail flapping?

Why is the boom coming towards me?

Where should I sit?

Why has the boat suddenly stopped?

Why are we leaning over?

And somebody beside you may be saying something helpful such as:

"Look where you're going."

Which sounds obvious.

But it isn't.

A beginner has an enormous mental workload.

There are so many unfamiliar things happening that almost all their concentration is being used simply operating the boat.

That is perfectly normal.

Gradually, however, something changes.

You stop having to think consciously about every little action.

You feel the boat heel and automatically move your weight.

You hear the sail begin to flap and realise that either your course or sail trim needs changing.

You approach a tack and instinctively prepare the sheet.

Your hands begin doing things before you have consciously instructed them.

And that frees up something extraordinarily important.

Your attention.


The Good Sailor Starts Looking Outside the Boat

This may be one of the biggest steps in learning to sail.

Instead of staring continuously at sails, ropes and telltales, you begin looking further away.

You start noticing:

  • the water ahead;

  • other boats;

  • the riverbank;

  • wind on the surface;

  • approaching gusts;

  • quieter patches of water;

  • clouds;

  • bends in the river;

  • obstructions;

  • the next mark;

  • boats further up the course;

  • and what the wind seems to be doing to them.

Suddenly the world outside your own cockpit becomes important.

That is where much of good sailing begins.

A sailor who reacts only to what is happening to their own boat is always slightly behind events.

A sailor who notices what is about to happen can prepare for it.


Reaction Versus Anticipation

Imagine two boats sailing towards a stronger gust.

In the first boat, the helm is looking mainly at the sails.

The gust arrives.

The boat suddenly heels.

The helm pulls the tiller.

The crew scrambles across.

The mainsheet is released.

The boat changes direction.

Eventually everything is brought back under control.

Nothing disastrous has happened.

But the boat has lost speed and direction.

Now imagine another crew approaching exactly the same gust.

They have already seen the darker patch of water moving towards them.

The crew shifts weight slightly before it arrives.

The helm is ready.

The sails may be adjusted.

When the gust reaches the boat, it accelerates rather than becoming an emergency.

That is the difference between reacting and anticipating.

And anticipation is one of the defining characteristics of an improving sailor.


Start Reading the Water

One of the things I increasingly notice when sailing is how much information is written on the surface of the water.

You can sometimes see the wind approaching you.

A darker patch of rippled water may indicate stronger wind.

A surprisingly smooth patch can indicate less.

On a river, this becomes especially interesting because the wind is rarely perfectly uniform.

Trees, buildings, bends and gaps in the bank can all influence what reaches the boat.

The wind you are sailing in now may be quite different from the wind 100 metres ahead.

So rather than asking:

"What is the wind doing?"

a good sailor increasingly asks:

"What is the wind about to do?"

That is a much more useful question.


Watch Other Boats — They Are Free Wind Indicators

Another excellent source of information is other sailing boats.

Suppose you are sailing up a river and see a boat 50 metres ahead suddenly heel.

There is a very good chance that whatever caused that boat to heel is heading towards you.

If several boats ahead suddenly slow down, you might be approaching a lull.

If boats are changing direction without tacking, there may have been a wind shift.

If boats on one side of the river appear to be sailing significantly faster than those on the other, there may be more pressure there.

You do not need sophisticated instruments.

You already have dozens of wind indicators scattered around the sailing area.

They are called other boats.


Balance Is More Than "Don't Capsize"

Beginners often think of balance as simply preventing the boat from falling over.

But boat balance affects performance long before capsize becomes remotely likely.

A dinghy may still be perfectly safe while heeled considerably.

But it may not be sailing efficiently.

Excessive heel can change the underwater shape of the hull.

It can alter the effectiveness of the rudder and centreboard.

It can create additional drag.

It can make steering more difficult.

Good crews therefore constantly make small adjustments.

Perhaps only a few centimetres at a time.

They move forwards.

They move aft.

They move inboard.

They move outboard.

Sometimes the movement is so small that an observer might barely notice it.

Yet the boat feels different.

This is particularly obvious in lighter boats where crew movement can represent a significant proportion of the total weight of boat and sailors combined.


The Boat Talks to You

One of the fascinating things about gaining sailing experience is that you begin to recognise that the boat is continually giving you information.

You feel pressure building on the tiller.

You hear the sound of water changing.

The boat begins heeling more strongly.

The sails feel loaded.

The jib starts fluttering.

The boat becomes sluggish.

The bow starts pushing water differently.

Some of this information is visual.

Some is heard.

Much of it is simply felt.

Experienced sailors sometimes appear to respond almost instantly to these changes.

That can look mysterious to a beginner.

It isn't.

They have simply experienced the signal often enough to recognise what usually happens next.


The Tiller Is Not Just a Steering Wheel

One sign of improving sailing is that the tiller starts becoming a source of information rather than simply a control.

A beginner understandably uses the tiller to make the boat turn.

But eventually you start feeling what the rudder is telling you.

If there is considerable pressure on the tiller, ask why.

Is the boat heeling excessively?

Is the sail trim creating too much weather helm?

Has the balance of the boat changed?

Are you trying to steer constantly instead of allowing the boat to sail?

One of the goals of good boat trim is often to reduce unnecessary rudder movement.

Every large rudder movement is effectively putting a brake into the water.

Sometimes that braking effect is necessary.

But constantly steering left and right is rarely quick.

A well-balanced boat can feel remarkably light through the tiller.


Steering Less Can Mean Sailing Better

This can initially seem strange.

Surely a better sailor should be steering more accurately?

Yes — but accurate steering does not necessarily mean constantly moving the tiller.

Large rudder movements create drag.

Often the fastest route through the water comes from making small corrections and allowing the hull, sails and foils to work together.

That means controlling direction with more than the rudder.

Small changes in:

  • mainsheet;

  • jib trim;

  • heel;

  • crew position;

  • sail balance;

  • and boat speed

all influence where the boat wants to go.

The tiller becomes only one part of the system.


Judgement Cannot Be Reduced to a Single Rule

This is where sailing becomes particularly interesting.

There are many situations where two apparently contradictory pieces of advice can both be correct.

Should you point higher or sail faster?

It depends.

Should you ease the mainsheet in a gust?

Sometimes.

Should you head up?

Perhaps.

Should you bear away?

Possibly.

Should you tack now?

That depends on what the wind is doing, what the river is doing, where the other boats are and where you ultimately want to go.

Sailing gradually becomes less about memorising instructions and more about developing judgement.

And judgement comes from observation followed by experience.


Learning in Our RS Toura

I have found the RS Toura particularly useful for seeing this transition from simply operating a boat to thinking about what the boat is doing.

It is a forgiving boat.

That matters when people are learning.

There is time to make a decision.

There is time to correct something.

And with someone experienced aboard, a newcomer can concentrate on one or two skills without every mistake becoming dramatic.

When I am crewing, for example, I can concentrate on the jib, weight distribution and what is happening around us while the helm concentrates on steering.

That division of jobs also demonstrates something important.

Good sailing is not necessarily centred on the person holding the tiller.

A good crew may see a gust first.

They may spot another boat.

They may notice the jib becoming inefficient.

They may suggest moving weight.

They may see that the next tack needs preparing.

Sailing becomes teamwork.


Then There Is Champagne

Our A-Rater Champagne takes that idea considerably further.

Champagne is a very different boat from the RS Toura.

Long, narrow and powerful, an A-Rater does not give you quite the same amount of time to wonder what is happening.

Things often need to be anticipated.

The crew and midhand must be ready.

Weight movement matters.

Communication matters.

Sail handling matters.

Where the next gust is coming from matters.

And what the boat is about to do may be more important than what it is doing at that exact moment.

That has reinforced something for me.

A more demanding boat does not simply require you to perform the same actions faster.

It encourages you to think further ahead.

The longer I sail, the more I realise that anticipation is one of the most important sailing skills of all.


Look Up, Look Ahead, Look Around

There is a simple exercise that an improving sailor can practise.

Every few seconds, deliberately move your attention.

Look at:

The boat

Are the sails trimmed?

Is the boat balanced?

Is everything under control?

Then look at:

The water immediately ahead

Any obstructions?

Any changes in wind?

Any other boats?

Then:

Further ahead

What is happening where you will be in 20 or 30 seconds?

Then:

Around you

Where are the other boats?

Where is the shore?

Has anything changed?

Then:

Up

What are the clouds doing?

Where is the wind appearing to come from?

Then return briefly to the boat.

This scanning pattern gradually becomes automatic.

Pilots do something similar in aircraft.

Drivers do something similar on the road.

Good sailors do it on the water.


Start Asking "What Happens Next?"

This may be one of the simplest ways to improve your sailing.

Whenever you have a moment, ask yourself:

What happens next?

You are sailing towards the bank.

What happens next?

A gust is approaching.

What happens next?

Another boat is coming towards you.

What happens next?

You are approaching the windward mark.

What happens next?

The river bends.

What happens next?

The wind has just shifted.

What happens next?

You are 20 metres from the pontoon.

What happens next?

This changes sailing from a sequence of reactions into a sequence of planned actions.


A Good Sailor Has Spare Brain Capacity

One of the easiest ways of recognising an experienced sailor is that they often appear rather relaxed.

That does not mean they are doing nothing.

Usually quite the opposite.

They are processing a great deal of information.

But many of the basic actions have become automatic.

The beginner thinks:

"I need to tack. Move the tiller. Duck under the boom. Change sides. Release this sheet. Pull that sheet."

The experienced sailor may simply think:

"Tack now."

The mechanical actions largely take care of themselves.

That leaves mental capacity available for the bigger questions.

Where is the next gust?

What is the wind doing?

Where are the other boats?

Which side of the river looks stronger?

What happens after the tack?

That spare thinking capacity is enormously valuable.


Good Sailing Is Not Necessarily Fast Sailing

There is another distinction worth making.

A good sailor is not simply someone who wins races.

Racing is an excellent way to improve because it exposes weaknesses very quickly.

If another boat repeatedly sails past you, there is probably something to learn.

But somebody can be an excellent sailor without ever entering a race.

A good sailor may be the person who:

  • keeps their crew safe;

  • anticipates changing conditions;

  • treats other water users considerately;

  • brings the boat back without drama;

  • notices deteriorating weather;

  • knows when conditions are unsuitable;

  • looks after the equipment;

  • helps less experienced sailors;

  • and makes sensible decisions.

Speed is only one measure of sailing skill.

Judgement may be far more important.


Experience Is Really Pattern Recognition

People sometimes talk about sailing experience as though it were simply a matter of accumulating years.

But I think experience is more useful when we think of it as building a library of patterns.

You have seen a dark patch of water before.

You know what followed.

You have felt the tiller suddenly load up before.

You know what caused it.

You have watched a boat slow dramatically approaching a particular stretch of river.

Next time you look for the reason.

You have approached a mark badly before.

Next time you plan earlier.

Every sail adds a few more patterns.

Eventually you begin recognising situations before they fully develop.

That is anticipation.

And anticipation is what makes difficult sailing begin to look effortless.


The Second Stage of Learning to Sail

The first stage of sailing is about answering questions such as:

What does this rope do?

How do I tack?

How do I gybe?

How do I make the boat go faster?

How do I stop?

The next stage asks different questions:

Where should I be looking?

What is the wind about to do?

Why did the boat suddenly feel different?

Why is that boat going faster than us?

What will happen in 30 seconds?

Could I have prepared earlier?

That is where sailing begins becoming something much richer than simply operating a boat.


The Biggest Improvement May Come When You Stop Looking at the Boat

Of course you still need to look at the sails.

You still need to check the sheets.

You still need to watch the telltales.

You still need to know what the boat is doing.

But eventually those things become part of a much larger picture.

Your attention begins moving outside the boat.

Across the water.

Up the river.

Towards the clouds.

Towards the other boats.

Towards what is about to happen.

And that may be the moment when you begin changing from somebody who can sail into somebody who is becoming a sailor.

Over the next few weeks on pmrsailing.uk, I will explore some of those next-stage skills: reading gusts, recognising wind shifts, understanding boat balance, using telltales properly, steering efficiently, choosing the best route and developing the judgement that makes sailing smoother, safer and ultimately faster.

Because once you can make a boat sail, the really interesting part begins.
