Should You Ease the Sail, Hike Harder or Steer?
The gust has arrived. Now what?
You saw the darker patch moving across the water.
You felt the first increase in pressure on your face.
You warned the crew.
You moved your weight ready.
Then the gust actually reaches the boat.
Suddenly the mainsheet becomes heavier, the boat begins to heel and the rudder starts telling you that something has changed.
What should you do?
Ease the sail? Hike harder? Steer?
The slightly frustrating answer is:
Possibly all three.
But they do different jobs, and learning which control to use first is one of the steps that turns basic boat handling into genuinely good sailing.
The aim is not simply to stop the boat capsizing.
The aim is to use as much of the gust as possible to make the boat go faster while keeping the boat balanced, controllable and efficient.
That distinction matters.
A Gust Is Extra Energy
When a gust arrives, the wind force on the sails increases.
That extra force can do two useful things:
drive the boat forwards;
accelerate the boat.
Unfortunately, it can also do something less useful:
push the boat further over.
A beginner often experiences a gust as something that must be fought.
The boat heels.
They pull on the tiller.
Someone moves suddenly across the boat.
The mainsheet gets released.
Everything becomes rather busy.
But the gust is not the enemy.
It is free energy.
The challenge is deciding how much of it you can turn into forward motion before the boat becomes excessively heeled or difficult to steer.
Why Does the Boat Heel More in a Gust?
The aerodynamic force from the sails acts some distance above the water.
The sideways component of that force therefore creates a turning effect that tries to heel the boat.
In simple terms:
Heeling moment = sideways force x distance from the centre of resistance
Increase the wind force and the heeling moment increases.
Your job as helm and crew is to provide enough opposing righting moment to keep the boat close to its efficient sailing angle.
That is where hiking comes in.
But hiking is not the only control available.
You can also reduce the force by easing the sail, or alter the way the sail meets the wind by steering.
Those are our three main controls.
Control Number One: Move Your Weight
If a moderate gust arrives and the boat can comfortably handle the extra power, the first response may be simply:
use your body weight.
Move out.
Hike harder.
Get the crew weight where it is most effective.
This allows you to keep the sails powered and convert more of the gust into boat speed.
That is important because immediately dumping the mainsheet every time the wind increases can throw useful energy away.
Imagine sailing close-hauled in a training dinghy such as an RS Toura.
A modest gust arrives.
The boat begins to heel perhaps five or ten degrees more.
If the crew moves their weight out promptly, the boat may flatten again almost immediately.
The sails remain powered.
The boat accelerates.
Nothing else may be required.
That is a much better response than waiting until the boat is heavily heeled and then releasing half a metre of mainsheet.
Move Early, Not Dramatically
The timing matters almost as much as the amount of movement.
Suppose the gust has already reached the boat.
The boat heels.
Then the crew notices.
Then they move.
By then the helm may already have responded with the rudder and mainsheet.
The whole boat starts oscillating between overpowered and underpowered.
Compare that with:
"Gust coming in three... two... one..."
Everyone is already prepared.
The crew moves out as the pressure arrives.
The boat remains comparatively level.
To somebody watching from the bank, almost nothing seems to have happened.
That apparent lack of drama is often the mark of good sailing.
Control Number Two: Ease the Sheet
There comes a point where moving your weight is no longer enough.
Perhaps everyone is already hiking.
Perhaps the gust is much stronger than expected.
Perhaps the boat has a great deal of sail area.
Now you need to reduce the aerodynamic force.
The quickest control available is usually the mainsheet.
Ease it.
But there is an important difference between easing the sheet and simply letting it go.
Ease Only What You Need
Suppose the boat is sailing upwind and a strong gust arrives.
The boat heels sharply.
If you dump the mainsheet completely, the mainsail loses a large proportion of its driving force.
The boat slows.
When the gust passes, the sheet then has to be hauled back in.
A more experienced sailor often makes a much smaller movement.
A few centimetres.
Perhaps slightly more.
Just enough to allow the top of the sail to open and reduce the excess force.
The boat stays flatter.
The rudder remains lighter.
But the sail continues driving the boat forwards.
As the boat accelerates and the initial pressure reduces, the sheet can be brought back in.
That gives us an important principle:
Ease enough to control the heel, but not automatically enough to remove all the power.
Sometimes You Must Dump the Mainsheet
There is also a point where efficiency becomes considerably less important than staying upright.
If a sudden squall hits and the boat is going over rapidly, release the mainsheet.
Do not preserve the perfect sail trim while contemplating whether the mast might shortly be horizontal.
The priority becomes:
reduce the sail force;
flatten the boat;
regain control;
rebuild speed afterwards.
Good sailing is not about rigid rules.
It is about judgement.
Control Number Three: Steer
The third control is perhaps the most interesting because steering changes the angle between the sails and the wind.
When sailing close-hauled, a small movement towards the wind can reduce the effective angle of attack of the sails.
This is often described as feathering.
A gust arrives.
Instead of allowing all that extra force to heel the boat, the helm allows the boat to come slightly closer to the wind.
The sails generate less sideways force and some of the gust can effectively be converted into height up the course.
Used well, this can be extremely effective.
Used badly, it simply stops the boat.
Do Not Turn Every Gust Into a Tack
The steering movement required may be surprisingly small.
A common mistake is to respond to increased heel by pulling hard on the tiller.
The boat turns too far into the wind.
The sails flap.
The boat slows dramatically.
Then the helm bears away again.
The sails refill suddenly.
The boat heels again.
The result is a repeated cycle:
heel — steer — flap — slow — bear away — heel again.
The better response is often much subtler.
Maintain speed.
Watch the telltales.
Allow the boat to come slightly higher if necessary.
Then return smoothly to the correct course as the gust passes.
But Was It a Gust or a Wind Shift?
This is where our previous sailing topics begin joining together.
A gust does not necessarily arrive from exactly the same direction as the surrounding wind.
It may also bring a wind shift.
You therefore have two things happening at once:
wind speed has changed;
wind direction may have changed.
Suppose you are close-hauled on starboard tack.
The gust arrives and the boat suddenly feels overpowered.
Your first instinct might be to head up.
But what if the gust has also headed you?
The correct steering response may be different.
This is why good sailors increasingly stop thinking in isolated rules.
They start asking:
What is the boat actually telling me?
Look at:
the telltales;
the angle of heel;
the pressure on the helm;
your heading;
the water ahead;
the other boats;
the apparent wind.
The gust gives clues.
Small Gust: Keep the Power
Imagine a pleasant Force 2 to 3 afternoon.
You are sailing upwind.
A small gust approaches.
The crew moves slightly further out.
The boat heels perhaps momentarily and then flattens.
You feel the acceleration.
In this situation there may be no reason to ease anything.
Instead:
keep the sails working and enjoy the extra speed.
One of the pleasures of sailing well is feeling the boat accelerate beneath you without needing a dramatic control movement.
Moderate Gust: Hike and Ease Together
Now imagine a stronger gust.
The crew moves out but the boat still begins to heel.
This is where two controls work together.
Move the weight.
Ease the mainsheet a little.
The two actions complement one another.
The weight increases the available righting moment.
The eased sheet reduces the heeling moment.
The boat stays flatter and accelerates.
As speed increases, you may be able to sheet back in.
That last part is important.
Do not forget to put the power back on.
A surprisingly common mistake is to ease correctly for the gust and then leave the sail eased long after the gust has passed.
Big Gust: Ease First
There is a different response when the gust is sufficiently strong that the boat is immediately in danger of excessive heel.
In that situation, the sheet becomes the fastest safety valve.
Ease first.
Move weight.
Stabilise the boat.
Then decide whether a small steering correction is needed.
The sequence might happen within a second or two.
It does not have to look dramatic.
But the priorities have changed.
You are no longer trying to preserve every last fraction of sail power.
You are trying to maintain control.
A Useful Upwind Sequence
When sailing close-hauled, I think about the process roughly like this:
Small gust
Hike → keep the sails powered → accelerate.
Moderate gust
Hike → ease slightly → accelerate → sheet back in.
Strong sustained gust
Hike hard → ease progressively → feather slightly if appropriate → maintain boat speed.
Sudden overpowering gust
Ease immediately → flatten the boat → regain control → retrim.
These are not rigid instructions.
They are a framework for thinking.
Conditions, boat type, crew weight, wave conditions and wind direction will all change the detail.
What About Reaching?
The situation changes when the boat is reaching.
You may already have the mainsail well eased.
The gust arrives with the sail producing plenty of power.
Here, blindly steering towards the wind is not necessarily the best answer.
A sudden large course change can itself destabilise the boat.
Your first tools are generally:
move the weight appropriately;
ease the sheet sufficiently;
keep the boat balanced;
make deliberate rather than panicked steering movements.
On a fast reach, the goal may be to let the boat accelerate.
As the boat speeds up, the apparent wind changes and the entire balance of the boat can alter.
This is one reason performance sailing becomes so addictive.
The faster the boat goes, the more the wind that the boat itself creates through its motion becomes part of the problem.
And Downwind?
Downwind sailing presents a different set of problems again.
The sail is already eased substantially.
There may be much less mainsheet left to release.
A gust can cause the boat to accelerate rapidly and may also make it start rolling.
Now body movement and steering become especially important.
The important lesson for developing sailors is not to transfer an upwind rule blindly into every situation.
"Gust means head up" is not a sailing law.
Neither is:
"Gust means ease the sheet."
The correct response depends on where the wind is coming from relative to the boat.
Why Keeping the Boat Flat Matters
This also connects directly with another important lesson: a dramatically heeled boat is not necessarily a fast boat.
Too much heel can produce several unwanted effects.
The underwater shape of the hull changes.
The centreboard or daggerboard becomes less effective.
The rudder may have to work harder.
Weather helm increases.
The sail plan is no longer presented to the wind as efficiently.
Some of the wind's energy is effectively being used to push the boat sideways and heel it instead of driving it forwards.
So when a gust arrives, the question is not:
"How much heel can I tolerate?"
A much better question is:
"How much of this extra energy can I turn into useful speed?"
The Rudder Is Often the Clue
One of the best indicators is the tiller.
When the boat is properly balanced, the helm should normally feel relatively light.
As the boat heels excessively, weather helm commonly increases.
The helm then has to pull harder on the tiller to maintain course.
That rudder angle creates drag.
This gives us a useful diagnostic chain:
More heel → more weather helm → more rudder angle → more drag.
Flatten the boat and something rather pleasing often happens.
The helm becomes lighter.
The rudder straightens.
The boat accelerates.
You have not necessarily added any power.
You have simply stopped wasting as much of it.
The RS Toura Gives You Time to Think
This difference is very noticeable when moving between different boats.
A training boat such as an RS Toura is deliberately forgiving.
It provides time.
A gust arrives.
The boat heels.
The crew can react.
You can ease the sheet.
You can correct the steering.
The boat generally gives you a little time to sort things out.
That makes it excellent for learning.
You can deliberately experiment.
Try sailing through one modest gust using mainly crew weight.
Then try another while easing slightly.
Feel what happens to the helm.
Notice the acceleration.
Look at the wake.
That experimentation turns a sailing instruction into something you actually understand.
Champagne Makes the Timing Much More Obvious
Our A-Rater Champagne presents the same physics, but on a rather different scale.
She is long, narrow and powerful, with several people contributing to the balance of the boat.
There is much more boat moving through the water and considerably more sail producing force.
That makes coordination particularly important.
On Champagne, I am increasingly conscious that a gust should not result in several independent reactions.
If one person moves inboard just as another moves out, the helm steers aggressively and the sail is simultaneously eased, we can easily make a manageable gust far more complicated than it needed to be.
Instead the boat benefits from anticipation and communication.
A call of:
"Pressure coming."
can prepare everyone.
Then the helm, mainsheet and crew weight can work together.
When it goes well, the sensation is wonderful.
The gust arrives.
The boat stiffens.
Everyone moves appropriately.
The sails remain working.
Champagne accelerates.
There is very little drama.
Only speed.
The Best Response May Be No Visible Response
That brings us to one of the most important lessons.
As sailors improve, their movements frequently become smaller rather than larger.
Beginners often make big corrections after the boat has already done something unwanted.
Experienced sailors make small corrections before the unwanted movement develops.
The difference might be:
5 cm of mainsheet instead of 50 cm.
A slight increase in hiking rather than somebody suddenly scrambling across the boat.
Two degrees of steering rather than ten.
The result is a boat that appears calmer.
That calmness is not because nothing is happening.
Quite the opposite.
It is because several things are happening at exactly the right time.
Try This as a Training Exercise
The next time you are sailing in moderate, gusty conditions, choose an open stretch of water and consciously observe what happens when each gust arrives.
Before the gust:
identify it on the water;
warn the crew;
prepare your body position.
As it arrives:
watch the angle of heel;
feel the mainsheet load;
notice the tiller pressure;
watch the telltales.
Then ask yourself:
Could body weight alone handle that gust?
If not:
How little mainsheet could I ease while keeping the boat flat?
Then:
Could a very small steering adjustment make the boat more efficient?
Finally, as the gust passes:
Did I put the power back on quickly enough?
That final question can produce just as much speed as the initial gust response.
Do Not Fight the Boat
Perhaps the biggest change in sailing comes when you stop trying to force the boat to obey you.
Instead you start listening to it.
Heel tells you about power and balance.
The mainsheet tells you about sail load.
The tiller tells you about balance and weather helm.
The telltales tell you about airflow.
The water tells you what may happen next.
Each is giving you information.
Good boat handling is really the process of combining those signals.
So — Ease, Hike or Steer?
The answer is:
Use the smallest combination necessary to keep the boat balanced and fast.
If body weight is enough, keep the power.
If the boat is still heeling, ease.
If a small change of heading improves balance or converts the extra pressure into height, steer.
If the boat is becoming uncontrollable, forget the perfect racing technique and depower it.
Above all, avoid waiting until the boat is already badly out of balance.
The Gust Is an Opportunity
Beginners often dread gusts because gusts make the boat heel.
As experience develops, something changes.
You begin to look forward to them.
That darker patch on the water is no longer just a warning.
It is an opportunity.
An opportunity to accelerate.
An opportunity to gain height.
An opportunity to feel the boat come alive.
And the difference between a gust that creates chaos and a gust that creates speed can be remarkably small:
a few centimetres of mainsheet,
a little more body weight,
and perhaps just a few degrees of steering.
The best sailors do not simply survive the gust.
They use it.
